Treatment Objective
The treatment goals include removing the mold from the textblock, mitigating the textblock distortion, and rebinding the volume in a manner that prioritizes conservation principles over the original binding aesthetic.
Description & Condition
This vellum-over-board tightback binding suffers from extensive water and mold damage. The boards are warped and mottled with multi-colored mold growth, while the textblock is cockled and distorted.
Treatment Proposal
1. Remove moldy boards.
2. Vacuum textblock using a Nils Fisk Hepavacuum.
3. Treat textblock with ethanol.
4. Gently humidify textblock and press between boards in a standing press to correct its alignment.
5. Attach new boards using the Princeton 305 method.
6. Cover with undyed, lined linen.
7. Label spine.
Treatment Procedure
1. The moldy boards were removed from the textblock.
2. The textblock was thoroughly vacuumed using a Nils Fisk Hepavacuum.
3. The textblock was treated with ethanol.
4. The textblock was gently humidified and pressed between boards in a standing press.
5. New boards were attached using the Princeton 305 method.
6. The new binding was covered with airplane linen lined with manila hemp lens tissue.
7. Laser printed Moriki paper labels were fixed with Klucel-G consolidant and affixed to the spine with PVA adhesive. |
