Book Conservation
In my approach to special collections book conservation, I take to heart Nicholas Pickwoad's observation that “entirely new bindings on early textblocks do not need to follow slavishly an original that has inbuilt weaknesses which will result in the early collapse of that structure.” In choosing materials and repair techniques, I strive to balance the goal of a sympathetic binding against the goal of a sound working structure. My repairs to existing bindings tend toward the conservative and minimally invasive whenever possible.
